If you’re looking to improve your outdoor space but are unsure how, rope fencing is an outstanding way to start. They’re also easy to make!
Read on as we look at how to build rope fencing for gardens and how Garden Ropes can help.
What is rope fencing?
Rope fencing is a popular type of barrier, often used along garden paths and flower beds.
These installations can enclose areas, create boundaries, or simply act as a decorative piece in your garden or patio.
The good news is that there are also plenty of benefits – enjoy an eco-friendly, easy-to-maintain, visually appealing, and affordable way to enhance your outdoor space.

How to build rope fencing
Installing your own rope fencing couldn’t be easier – you can achieve your desired result in just four easy steps.
-
Deciding on design
Firstly, you must decide on your fence design to ensure the perfect final look. It’s worth considering the following:
- How many posts would you like
- Where you want the rope fencing to be
- How long or high should the fence be
- What you want it to look like – consider colours, rope types, and post types
During this period, you should measure the space where you want to install your rope fencing.
-
Setting the posts
Next, it’s time to install wooden posts.
Start by digging a hole in the ground that’s approximately a foot or two deep, depending on the size of the posts and the level of support required.
The posts can then either be pushed into the ground or secured with concrete for extra stability.
If you have used concrete, it’s best to leave it for a day or to ensure that it's set properly for a strong, long-lasting foundation.

-
Attaching the rope
Firstly, you must cut and measure rope, ensuring that you have enough length between each post, with some extra to tie off at the ends.
There are several ways to attach your rope to the posts:
- Simply wrap or tie the rope securely around the posts, starting at one and working your way around.
- Or, you can drill holes in the posts and feed the rope through. Make sure you wait for the rope to arrive before drilling, and use a test hole on some old wood to make sure the holes are the right size. Don’t just rely on the diameter you ordered – often the holes will need to be bigger than the rope diameter.
- Another excellent and secure method is by attaching eye hooks and threading the rope through (available in matt black, antique or polished brass, satin or glossy chrome, and black nickel).
Once completed, simply tie off the rope properly and tuck off any edges for a neat finish. Use tape on the ends of natural ropes, or use a hot blade or flame on synthetic rope, to make sure the ends do not fray.
Important tip: before ordering your rope, use a piece of string to work out the correct length, taking into account what size swags look best. And if using a natural rope, remember that when it gets wet, the fibres will swell up and make the length of the rope shorter by up to 10-15%, so allow more when you order.
For extra finishing touches, adding flowers or lights to your new installation is an excellent way to elevate your garden.
What rope should I choose?
If you’re considering implementing rope fencing in your outdoor space, it’s really important to assess the best type of rope for this application.
First, decide whether you particularly want a rope made from natural fibres (eco-friendlier) or whether you want it to last longer in the elements, in which case a synthetic rope may be best.
We often recommend Synthetic Hemp rope because it looks like a natural rope, is soft and easy to work with and is great value for money. Without doubt, it is a best-seller.
Some of our customers have used a lovely, colourful Polysilk rope to make a splash.
People who prefer natural ropes sometimes opt for Manila rope, which contains oils to make it last longer. If they are prepared to sacrifice some durability, they might opt for Flax Hemp. Both offer a strong grip when knotted.
Or a best-of-both-worlds approach is Jute rope - it contains a synthetic core for extra strength.
