Decking Ropes
Our decking rope collection brings together a range of natural and synthetic options to suit any garden or landscaping project.
Without doubt our first choices for decking are PolyHemp ropes. We always advise customers to consider these first because they look like natural ropes and suit the garden, but are in fact synthetic. This means they will not rot like a natural rope, keeping their strength and appearance for many years.
Some people have chosen one of our wonderful, coloured PolySilk ropes as a funky design feature. Those who want to have a natural rope might go for Manila or Jute.
Whether you're building handrails, defining borders, fitting barrier ropes or adding rustic detail to decking, we've got a rope to suit. All are easy to knot and work with, and available in a variety of diameters.
Supplied by the metre or in full coils, with fast UK delivery on every order.

How to attach decking rope
Measure right
The easiest way is to use a bit of string. Hold it up against the posts and create the swag effect you like best. Remember to add in extra length for any knots, metal fittings, etc.
- Add an extra 40-50cm for any knots you intend to tie in the rope
- Add 10-15% to account for any shrinkage (applies to natural fibre ropes only)
- Deduct around 9cm for each metal hook or eye plate used
We sell by the metre, so always over-measure rather than under-measure. We really do not want to sell you more rope than you need, but there's nothing worse than being 50cm short.
All of our decking ropes are sold by the metre, which means it’s really easy to order the right amount for your specific project – without any unnecessary waste or cost. For landscapers looking to buy in bulk, we also stock PolyHemp, Jute and Manila in 220m coils.
Drill the holes right
The diameter of the hole will always need to be larger than the diameter of the rope, otherwise it is likely to ‘bunch’ up when you attempt to feed it through. So we strongly advise you wait for the rope and fittings to arrive and then drill a test hole in some old wood first.

FAQ
What rope is best for a decking area?
What rope is best for a decking area?
The best rope for decking depends on the look you're going for and how much wear and weather exposure it'll get.
For a traditional natural look but with the strength and durability of synthetic materials, go for PolyHemp rope, which is the best choice for long-term outdoor use and garden projects.
For a natural rope option, we suggest Manila or Jute. Both are natural fibre ropes, whilst Jute has a synthetic inner core for added strength.
What diameter rope is best for decking?
What diameter rope is best for decking?
Most decking projects use rope between 24mm and 36mm in diameter. Thicker ropes tend to suit larger posts and give a more substantial, statement look, while thinner ropes offer a more subtle finish. It all depends on your post size and the style you're aiming for; just make sure the rope fits securely through any holes or eyelets in your decking posts.
It’s worth saying, garden decking ropes made from natural fibres can vary ever so slightly in diameter batch to batch by around +/- 10%. Ropes made from synthetic fibres tend to be more accurate. But whichever option you choose, to ensure you get the right fit, we advise waiting for your order to arrive before cutting or drilling holes in your posts.
How do you attach rope to decking posts?
How do you attach rope to decking posts?
Decking rope can be fixed using rope end fittings (like hooks or eyes), or simply threaded through pre-drilled holes in your decking posts. The holes will need to be bigger than the rope you are fitting, and it is best to wait for the rope to arrive before drilling for an exact measurement. For a clean finish and to help prevent fraying, we recommend sealing the rope ends with a heat-shrink cap or whipping twine. You'll find fittings and accessories in our shop to help complete the job neatly and securely.
Do I need metal fittings to install decking rope?
Do I need metal fittings to install decking rope?
No doubt about it, our metal fittings add a really classy touch.
But there are several ways to attach decking rope to rope posts. For example, you could drill holes in the posts, thread the rope through and secure it with knots. Or – if you’d like to create a rustic aesthetic – you could simply tie the rope around each post with a clove hitch.
Having said that, if you opt for our metal fittings, they are affordable to buy and easy to fit; they’re an effective way to secure the rope in place and enhance its overall appearance – creating impressive, professional-looking results.
